Proper Dinner Settings

“The Proper Place Setting”

I remember when I was younger how we would always use the good Silver for special occasions. I started thinking today about how there is so much involved in a proper table setting that it is sometimes not easy to remember where they all go!  So If you would like to set your table “properly” for your next special occasion meal, than be sure to follow these steps.

You will need:
  • Salad forks
  • Dinner Forks
  • Dessert Forks
  • Dinner/Service Plate
  • Knives
  • Teaspoons
  •  Soup spoons
  • Bread plates with butter knives
  •  Wine glasses
  •  Coffee Cup
  •   Water glasses
Note:  You should think of setting all the items in two rows.

Step One: Start by placing down the service plate. Once you have this on the table, everything else will be placed in proximity around it.

Step Two: Place the bread plate down with the butter knife. It should be located at the top left corner of the dinner plate (Approximately 11 o’clock). The coffee cup is placed to the right of the dinner plate at 1 o’clock. The water glass is at the top left of the coffee cup at 1 o’clock. Set up left to right in a top row (white wine, red wine, water glass.) The teaspoon for coffee and dessert fork are placed directly above the dinner plate. The fork is placed closest to the plate, underneath the spoon. The head of the fork faces the right, and the head of the spoon faces the left.

Note: The water glass will be filled with main course.

Step Three: Next, we complete the bottom row. It is set from left to right starting with the salad fork. The dinner fork comes next and on the other side finally the soup spoon.

Note: You can have as many forks and knives as you wish. It all depends on the amount of courses you will be served. Remember when you go to use your utensils work from the outside-in. (Just like Julia Roberts was taught in “Pretty Woman”.)

If you complete those three steps then you will have the perfect table setting.

As a last Note: the tip of the day is as follows:
If you cannot tell which bread plate and dinner settings are yours then pull out this little trick. Hold your hands up and connect your index fingers to your thumbs, Notice how your left hand makes the letter “b” and your left hand makes the letter “d”. Therefore you will know that the bread plate is on the left, and your dinner utensils  are on the right. Or simply say “BMW” (bread plate, main plate water glass) and look from left to right.

Paper Runner

Here is an inexpensive DIY for making a runner, and has the potential to be loaded with personality.  Using craft paper and a stencil (that you can pick up a hardware store) trace a pattern using a chalk. Cut out the paper using a paper cutter, and voila....a fabulous runner!

Enjoy!

Bouquet of Meaning

Still on the heels of the royal wedding, I have come to realize that there is a lot of thoughtfulness that went into their nuptials.  As time goes on, more and more details from the wedding are made clear and I have an appreciation for it.  When I first saw Kate's bouquet I was disappointed, but I have discovered the meaning behind every flower.  Here is the meaning of each flower in this thoughtful bouquet:

"The bride's bouquet is the traditional all-white arrangement of flowers carried at royal weddings. I recognized the dainty and elegant bell-shaped flowers, lily of the valley, which symbolize the return of happiness in Kate's wedding bouquet. The perfect accompaniment to the tiny white flowers is the Sweet William which stands for gallantry. The flower is most certainly a romantic tribute to the groom who is a gallant young man. White hyacinth which stands for constancy of love, and myrtle the symbol of love and marriage fill out the shield-shaped bouquet with its ribbon-wrapped handle. Touches of ivy are a subtle background representing friendship, affection, fidelity, wedded love and marriage. The symbolism is deep and meaningful. This bride, this elegant princess, has chosen flowers to honor the love she has for her prince. She has also respectfully chosen to honor the Queen and Great Britain with her use of meaningful native flowers and greenery."

Congratulations Kate and William for staying true to themselves.

Enjoy!

Tulip Bouquet

I really enjoy Tulips, and I feel inspired by this pink tulip bouquet.  The pink tulips are so much fun, and the matching pink wrap looks very chic. In this case, it is fun to be "matchy matchy" as I call it.  I would go as far to say that I would put a bridesmaid in the same colour dress, and create a whole monotone pallet.  Loves it!

Enjoy!

Royal Fashion

Last time I posted I was on my way to Disney World, and what a trek it was to get there.  I am back now with fullfilled childhood dreams, a golden tan, and glad to be back to blogging.

So lets mention the most anticipated wedding of the century!! As always I love bridal fashion, and I absolutely LOVED Kate Middleton's reception gown.  Designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, the dress had her trademark simplicity with a splash of bling and fur. She looks beautiful, and has effortless beauty which every bride wants to accomplish.

I wasn't sure if I loved her ceremony gown, but the more I look at it, the more I appreciate her staying true to herself.  I was expecting something over-the-top, but that isn't her style.  clean and romantic, this suited her perfectly.

Loves it!~
