Wedd-iquette

As a wedding coordinator, I get asked a lot of ettiquette questions.  In light of that, we have created the wedd-iquette series where we will answer questions on wedding etiquette.

Question:  Is it acceptable to ask for money instead of a wedding gift? If I do not register, than they would have to give money instead, right?

Answer:  It is perfectly acceptable to receive money as a gift instead of receiving something through a registry.  Though it is not acceptable to indicate that on an invitation, or by not creating a registry.  The best method is by word of mouth.  Let your parents and close family and friends know that you would prefer to have money.  They in turn can spread the preference by word of mouth.  It is up to a guest whether s/he prefers to give you a gift or money, and they should not feel pressured to do one over another.  That is why it is a good idea to always have a registry.
