DS&Co.'s Top 2011 Wedding Trends

We at DS&Co. have the great privilege to be a part of many Weddings for this upcoming season!  We are noticing some "super cute" trends that we want to share with you!

Old School Photography

Photography is taking a vintage spin.  Your photo's could feel just as though they have come out of the 70's.
Pretty and Simple

We love creating all types of Wedding styles.  One of our fav's is the "Simple Wedding".  With long tables to create stream lined looks, but is all reminiscent of times in the past, it accentuates the tasteful decor.  Must trends, vintage glass ware, country flowers, and tin cans which create a vintage-chic ambiance!

 DIY

Add those touches that represent who you are as a couple.  You do not need to make this complicated... just meaningful!

Food... Food... and more Food!

Share with your guests food that you LOVE! Pic yummy taste's that will make your guests remember for years to come.  For example a Mashed Potato Station which is served in Martini Glasses with a selection of your favourite toppings.  Another choice could be BBQ'd Corn on the Cobb! Have a selection of seasonings, can you say "super yummy"!

With so many choices and inspirations, all I can say is the biggest trend is being YOU! My only advice to you would be do not worry about the day... but focus on the journey.

The time has come... I am {SEALING THE DEAL}

Yours truly has FINALLY committed to getting married... four wedding dates later,  I am ready to make my Groomzilla the happiest man alive {hehehe}!  With that being said, I have a new appreciation for Gold.  For a long time, I was {Anti-Gold} BUT we recently got in Gold chair covers, and I am now inspired! So inspired, I have set a Wedding Date, chosen colours, and even a venue! From now until the big day, you can follow your Designer as she plans, worries, and even has a little fun while creating my BIG day.  All I have to say is... I feel sorry for my ~Wedding Planners~ you know who you are!

Hit with a Punch

Every great event needs a spectacular punch beverage.  This is great especially if your event is a cash bar, but still want to offer something sweet to your guests to drink.  Here is a great recipe for a Champagne Punch (Subsitute the champagne and wine with a non-alcoholic version so everyone can enjoy a sip)

1 Can of Frozen Cranberry Juice concentrate
1 can frozen pink lemonade concentrate
1 can frozed limeade concentrate
1 bottle of white wine, chilled
1 liter carbonated water, chilled
2 bottles champagne, chilled
Lemon slices and mint for garnish

Mix all the ingrediants together and put in a bowl or open spout.  Garnish with the lemon slices and mint.  You can also pre pour the drinks into mason jars, add a mint garnish and a wedding tag.  Your guests will enjoy a refreshing drink and will appreciate the details.

Enjoy!

In The Nude

Another hot trend this spring is the nude pump.  Fabulous with just about anything, the nude pump elongates the leg and adds pure class to your outfit. I see Angelina Jolie rocking this look often, and now it is the must have for spring 2011.

Enjoy!

Vintage Finds

A vintage wedding is so classy and so much fun.  There are so many ways to accomplish the look of your vintage wedding, and it can showcase your personality.  A great way to find these special decor items that will make your wedding unique is to scour the flea markets.

Grab an early morning coffee with your man, and head off to a local flea market.  You want to look for items that are in your colour scheme.  You can use books, vases, broaches, old chairs or tables (for signing the registry), etc...  Even if you don't know what you will do with a particular item, but you love it.... get it!  There is always somewhere you can put it.  In this case, less isn't always more.

Go ahead and shop away.

Enjoy!

Weddi-quette Series

Q.  I received back "not attending" replies to my wedding invitation, and I want to send out invitations to my B list guest. How do I do this without my guest knowing that they were on the "B" list?

A.  The best way to avoid a guest finding out they were on the B list is to immediately send out your B list invites as soon as you get a "not attending" reply.  Guests who will not be attending will usually answer first, and this allows the B list guest invite to be sent out asap. This way, they will never know that weren't A listed.

Fashion Inspires

Where does it all start?  Inspirations.... they can start from fashion, and here is a great example of that.  Preston Bailey created a chair cover that was inspired by a dress worn by Audrey Hepburn.  The dress and the pattern exudes "elegance", and is visually stunning in the room.  So if you are looking to get inspired to decorate for your own party or wedding... look no further than your own closet.  You may just inspire yourself!

The Kissing Game

Everyone knows the kissing tradition at weddings.  Everyone clinks their glass, and the newlyweds have to stand up and smoochy smoochy in front of the entire room.  Out with the tradition, and in with the fun.  Here are some great suggestions to make your guests get involved, and have a great time!

  1. Sing a Song with the word "LOVE" in it.
  2. If Someone wants the Bride and Groom to kiss, they must go to the microphone and tell a joke or funny story.
  3. Set up a Miniature golf course near the head table (1 Hole). The participants must get a Hole In One in order for the Bride and Groom to Kiss.
  4. ICEBREAKER - SHARE THE WORK. Instead of having the Bride and Groom kiss all the time, have all the couples names that are in attendance in a jar, have the Bride and Groom draw a couples name and have that couple kiss
  5. DONATION OF MONEY TO A CHARITY - Select your favorite charity. If the crowd wants you to kiss, they have to make a donation (the bigger the donation the better and longer the kiss).
  6. Use a hula hoop. Tell people that they have to hula for 30 seconds to make you kiss. This will also make for some great photo ops!
  7. Play a game of name that tune. The first person to come up with the answer stands up at their table and calls it out to the DJ. If they are right the couple kisses .
  8. Ask a question about yourself either individually or as a couple, put one question in an envelope on "each table". The table has to put their collective heads together to "answer" the question on their table. If answered "correctly" the Bride & Groom will kiss.
  9. Make the guests come up with a top 10 list similar to David Letterman's top 10 list - each table has a certain theme, and has to come up with a list of 10 things...like top 10 honeymoon activities (!), top 10 reasons why Bride & Groom are perfect for each other, top 10 famous couples, etc etc...(no wrong answers really, but it makes your guests work a little for the kiss!)
Enjoy!

Stanhope Beach Resort & Conference Center

Yesterday, Corry-Lynn and I went over to Prince Edward Island to visit the Stanhope Beach Resort & Conference Center.  It was adventure in its self to get there as both of us are terrible with directions, can't read a map or GPS, and couldn't quite figure out where South East was.  After a whirlind of lost driving, we finally made it to our destination, and what a spectacular venue it is!

Nestled Near the Covehead Bay, you have a stunning view of the bay and harbour.  Although it was really cold (and my toes nearly froze off), you couldn't help but be awestruck.

The inside is quaint and exploding with personality. Beautiful rooms, great food, and a stunning venue for weddings, it is well worth the trip up. Not to mention, Susan Freeman, the Director of Sales and Conference Services, has 20 years experience with weddings.  She was an absolute pleasure to deal with, and the length she goes to help the brides is incredible.

 Enjoy!

The Right Vitamin

Are you taking the right vitamins?  It is important to take the proper vitamins depending on your age and gender, but one of the best vitamins for your health and your beauty is Cod Liver Oil.... sounds gross..yes... but this vitamin has a great effect on your skin.  It helps to keep your skin balanced, and helps to avoid the winter dryness we all tend to get.

Do your research first to make sure that Cod Liver Oil is okay for you, but your skin will thank you. This is definately our family secret to great skin...

Weddi-quette Series

Q.  My mother has always dreamed of me getting married in her dress, but it does not fit me and it isn't my style.  I want her to be happy, but how do I tell her that I want my own wedding gown?

A.  It is important that your mom feel special on your wedding day, but she needs to understand that it is YOUR wedding.  You don`t want to hurt her feelings, but politely explain that you love the idea, but you have always dreamed of having your own gown that reflects your personality.  A great way though to ease your mother is to request to have a piece of her wedding gown or veil, and use the material as a wrap for your bouquet.  Adorn your bouquet and vintage wrap with a broach (which could be a family heirloom), and voila.... you have found a way to incorporate your mother`s wedding dress into your wedding.   Be firm in your decision, but she will understand.  She is your mother after all.

365 Days of Breakfast

The other day, a friend of mine said he was saving an expensive bottle of wine he won for a special occasion.  When I asked him what that special occasion was, he didn't know.  That happened to my dad once... he saved this fancy liquor for a special occasion, and he waited so long that when he finally opened it, it went bad.  This is why I told my friend that everyday is a special occasion....don't wait.

I have been thinking about this the past few days now, and when I came across this blog, it completely fit all my thoughts. (http://365daysofbreakfast.blogspot.com/)  The 365 days of Breakfast blog shows the bloggers breakfast everyday, and each day it is something new, amazingly scrumptious, and very pretty.  I am one of "those" people who scramble out of bed every morning, and always in a rush, and I never quite enjoy my morning breakfast (if I get to eat it).  So I am changing my ways....

Trevor Rowe, a fantastic chef with 5 Senses Gourmet, told me that he gets up every morning and cooks breakfast with his child.  At first I thought it was a little bit crazy, but now that I think about it.... it is something admiringly beautiful.

Moral of today's blog.... eat a scrumptious and pretty breakfast (on your best china and napkins)... and everyday is a special occasion.

Enjoy!

Ice Blue and Purple Chill

We were having some fun at the studio today, and making new boutionniers. I put together blue and purple, and I fell in love with the combination.  This colour combo would be adorable for a winter "diamond ice" wedding don't you think?

Monogrammed Flowers

Monograms are a classic, and adds a touch of sophistication to any wedding.  A great way to incorporate the monogram is to use flowers.  This can be an easy DIY with beautiful artificial flowers, or spare no expense, and have your florist create this beautiful masterpiece.  The monograms can be hung from doors, trees, easels, or even your head table.  They are a great addition, and your wedding will be timeless.

Enjoy!

Bow Ties a Must

This blog is for the gentleman.....  We talk so much about what the ladies should wear, that we tend to neglect what the men should wear.  A must have for the men's attire is the timeless bowtie.  Patterned....coloured.....textured....anything works.  Have  fun gentlemen, and take a bow for the bow tie. Enjoy!

Wrapped in Flowers

I love bouquets and the flowers that go in them....but what is also important is how those beautiful flowers are wrapped.  When speaking to your florist, see what different options they can offer you. Flowers wrapped satin ribbons, luscious patterned fabrics, or decals with jewels are a unique way to make your bouquet exactly that....yours!!

Enjoy!
